POSITION PURPOSE

 

This position is responsible for all aspects of Animal Breeding including flock growing, development, egg production, flock well-being, barn conditions, biosecurity and the oversight of bird insemination, egg procurement and storage.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Competency in basic math skills is essential;
  2. Practice and enforce strict biosecurity guidelines for flock protection to disease exposure.
  3. Ensure bird and environmental pathogen status testing through serology and bacterial culturing.
  4. Daily monitoring of bird health and mortality to recognize, diagnose and initiate treatment of disease if necessary.
  5. Daily inspection of proper egg handling procedures to provide consistent and pathogen free poult quality to customers.
  6. Learn and execute established broody control programs to maximize egg production.
  7. Monitor quality control of the artificial insemination process including semen handling, bird handling, and proper insemination techniques.
  8. Day to day management of employees including scheduling, execution of duties, and adherence to company policies.
  9. Work an extended workday and weekends,  as needed;
  10. Present a positive and professional image of the company;
  11. Exhibit courtesy and professionalism in everything you do;
  12. Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  13. Competency in computer skills to include reports, and communication as necessary.

 

Work requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, lifting, climbing, and use of numerous tools and equipment. Work may include long hours, weekends, and emergency response situations. Employees may be exposed to extreme temperatures, loud noise, dust, odors, chemicals, mud, snow, and wet conditions.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Reports and follows directives of Breeder Division Manager;
  2. Implements excellent management practices that ensure attainment of goals that follow Select Genetics protocols and procedures;
  3. Make profitable operation recommendations regarding processes and systems to drive safety, cost and efficiency improvements necessary to maintain/improve optimum egg production, egg fertility and poult quality;
  4. Ensure the safety of Select Genetics assets under the position’s management;
  5. Run/review activity reports determining the progress and status in attaining objectives and confer with the Service Technicians to revise objectives and plans in accordance with current conditions;
  6. Lead, train, motivate, and mentor staff on the farms with the objective of building and maintaining a high performing team to meet or exceed production goals;
  7. Maintain a safe and clean working environment;
  8. Willingness to work varied schedules where some weekends will be required;
  9. Follow and enforce all company regulations pertaining to bio security, animal welfare and safety;
  10. Other duties as assigned by direct supervisor;

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  1. 3 years of supervisory experience in the poultry breeding field is required;
  2. A college degree is preferred but not required.
  3. Does not own or operate around backyard poultry, foul, or swine operations off duty;
  4. Knowledge and/or experience of animal husbandry and welfare required;
  5. A valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record is required;
  6. A solid understanding of basic business practices; the ability to lead and manage others; the ability to build creative, productive, and cohesive teams
  7. Excellent communication skills including verbal, written and listening
  8. Ability to be self-sufficient and able to organize and prioritize work; the ability to work under pressure
  9. Ability to read and interpret relevant technical, industry, government regulations and legislation
  10. Ability to communicate, interact, influence, persuade all levels of employees.    
  11. The incumbent must exhibit sound business judgement, be decisive, flexible, and have determination.
  12. Bi-lingual Spanish speaking skills is preferred but not required.
